Music Industry

Personally, I believe that the future of music is in streaming, it is the easiest and most accessible form of listening to music as a majority of streaming apps are available on the computer, the phone, or smart televisions. This is addressed in the Global Music report from 2023 by discussing the over 10 percent growth in the popularity of streaming, with the rise of streaming there is however a more or less equal drop in downloading music as most phones these days have the ability to connect to the internet. The only reason one would need to download a playlist off of an app such as Spotify is that if they were going somewhere where they wouldn’t have access to the internet or want to pay for it. Amples would include someone listening to music on an airplane or driving somewhere where the reception/cell service may be spotty. Social media and streaming often go hand in hand especially when it comes to apps such as TikTok because users will be scrolling Tiktok and hear a part of a song that they like or that they think is interesting and then they would open a streaming app such as Spotify, Apple Music, or Youtube and be able to listen to the full song and possibly be introduced to other music by that artist. Social media and streaming allow bands that may not be able to be heard on mainstream radio because of reasons such as audience, distribution, or song content are able to have an equal chance to reach a diverse and widespread audience that they wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise.

Spencer Charnas (Lead Singer of Ice Nine Kills) playing Patrick Bateman. The breakdown
references the scene in American Psycho where Patrick kills Paul Allen.

Jacoby Shaddix (Lead Singer of Papa Roach) playing Paul Allen, the soon to be
murder victim who is very confused about what Patrick is rambling about.

A good example of this would be my own experience with my now favorite band, Ice Nine Kills. I listen to a fair amount of metalcore or alternative music and that is reflected in the TikToks I interact with. I was scrolling through TikTok a few years ago and came across the breakdown for their song Hip to be Scared, based on the movie American Psycho. I was intrigued by the video as I thought it was an interesting way to do the breakdown and the song itself featured the lead singer of Papa Roach, Jacoby Shaddix, another band which I really like and have liked since I was a child.
